Yep. We have almost made it to the end of another year. I consider that a win. I hope you do too.
These last couple of weeks of the year tend to be a bit of a muddle. It seems that it’s hard to get much done because of the holidays and trying to get everything ready for that. Even if you aren’t hosting a party or family, if you are just attending anything, things can get out of hand before you know it.
I wasn’t expecting to be suddenly busy this past weekend but sure enough. It all started with an unexpected invite to a drop in for Saturday. Before that was haircut day on Friday, which had been on my calendar for months so not a surprise. But then, I ordered some supplies from Guitar Center for pick up at the store. I didn’t expect them to be available until after Christmas. But I got an email that half the stuff was ready for pick up. And to go with that I have a guitar that needs repair. So first off to the haircut which is a 30 or so minute drive and then from there out to Guitar Center to get my stuff and drop off the guitar for repair. The Guitar Center is 30 minutes from me in the opposite direction of from my haircut. Then to get groceries and home to start making cookies.

I did pick up a little extra with the supplies at Guitar Center. I was browsing the website and found this lovely tea mug that I decided I needed. It’s fab. It’s 14 ounces so a nice big cup of hot tea. Not that it’s still hot by the time I finish drinking it.
Of course, on Saturday there was the last Taekwondo class of the year. There was also baking those cookies and then going to the drop in. It doesn’t seem like that should be a lot. But the cookies took a while to bake and then there was all the clean up to go with it. We didn’t stay long at the drop in, just a couple of hours. Even so, by the time I got home, I was pretty well done for the day.
Oh before all that, I did get started on the next part of the VR class. Again, these two weeks, it can be a little tough to focus so I haven’t gotten very far. I’m hoping to make that up the next couple of days. I would say that I’ll have more time for it because we have the week off from Taekwondo. However, I’ve pretty much booked something in it’s place.
I’ve been meaning to try Yoga for a while because it should help with flexibility and balance for Taekwondo. The frustrating bit has been that just about every beginning Yoga class near me conflicts with Taekwondo. So with being off from kicking things, I’ve
decided it’s the perfect opportunity to give it a go. Which means, no extra free time for catching up or getting ahead on the class. I have already had my first Yoga class and, wow, I didn’t expect to be quite as sore, and definitely not there. I will say, my back, that has been a bit fussy the last week or two, sure feels better. I did that on Sunday and then headed over to see my parents and have dinner with them. That was nice. A nice treat.
I had a nice quiet Christmas Monday. I listened to some music, played a little guitar and worked on the Ovation painting. I was wanting to do that and the VR class before the day was out. I chose the painting first, just because of the lighting. The way I’m set up to work
on that, getting the lighting right so it doesn’t glare and I can see where I’m putting dots is tricky. The light from the window from about mid-afternoon until it disappears, is really good. So, since it wasn’t terribly overcast and dark I opted to work on the painting. As you can see I’ve finally got the pattern completed. I want to go back and do some additional
coverage of the crimson.
And the more I think about it, the more I am inclined to do it before I start the second color of red. Once I finish the additional crimson I have to decide if I’m going to do the last two strings and frets next or the other red. It’s a little of a tough call for me because doing the strings and frets will really start to pull it together for the complete look, however getting the second red in will also make it start to look even more complete. Decisions.
In the mean time I will be getting to that VR class. I do want to finish it up and even get going on my final project. I’m still planning on the Christmas themed application and I think I’m going to need to find some nice sound clips to go with it all. That should be nice and tricky. Adding multiple sound clips. At least, I’m guessing there will be multiple sound clips. Ah well. I will get it figured out.
At some point I may have to ramble on about a couple of the music cd’s I’ve picked up this winter. I’ve found some gems that I’ve really been enjoying. For now, I’m off work on VR, play and paint guitars.

Yes, there was pain with the VR project. I think I mentioned that I was supposed to include video, or that’s how I interpreted it. When I went back and read the rubric, I had other options. But for most of the week I was working under the expectation that it had to have video. The Google VR video player did not play nice. It did for a little bit but it was so flaky that just moving the player 5 inches seemed to break it again. I finally read the rubric more carefully and found that, I didn’t have to have as much video as I thought, and that, I didn’t have to have video specifically.
I got the minimum number of stations with video working, so I thought, and then started adding in just graphics for the other stations. There were a minimum number of stations required. And then the video broke again. I had decided that I was going to go with option two which was to include audio and graphics. I had a solution, that was probably not quite what they had in mind, but it would have met the requirements and allowed for the video to start working. It’s not what I ended up doing.
Mine has been very helpful and encouraging all along. He was extremely helpful on this project. He found a way to get the video to work. The key was to not use the new Google VR video play setup but to just use the video player. I had looked at this other method before but was already getting frustrated and couldn’t figure out how to get it to work so I didn’t continue with it. I chose to continue down the path of beating my head against a wall. I took the method he illustrated and used it, with a minor change, probably also suggested by him. I enhanced the display a bit and got it all looking nice and was able to get all the videos to play.
the video. The method I used for navigation allows for greater freedom of movement. The way I implemented it, meant that you could actually find yourself outside the venue, unintentionally and with nothing to see. The solution to this was to add some sort of collision detection. In this case, it meant adding a mesh collider to every piece of geometry that make up the venue. Well, except the ceiling. I skipped that one. The nice thing was that as I added it, it chose the same mesh as reference for the collisions and so I didn’t have to do a lot of extra steps to get the right shape applied. I’ve included a shot of it running on my phone and a few from the view inside the editor.
done and not still hanging over my head. I went to the Blues Jam again, and I played. I not only played. I sang. When I was going the the Jams a few years ago, I tried singing a couple of times but they didn’t really work out. This time I chose something short, not too complicated, and a basic blues. The only other person that new the song was not in the band I was in so I had to sing if we were going to do it. I normally sing with an ‘inside voice’ because, I live in a condo and don’t practice some place else. I watched the guys get up there and belt out songs, and I with all the noise in the room otherwise, I figured out, I was going to have to put some extra power behind it. So I took a deep breath and let it rip. I remember my legs shaking part of the way through
it. And several people have assured me that the performance was good, and in key. I sang ‘Merry Christmas, Baby’. It’s seasonal. I had so much fun just playing with the other guys on stage. Even the songs I didn’t sing. An added bit to that fun was, when one of the gents who helps run the jam noted that I had come back with a new skill. And I have photo proof. No video this time.

That’s all well and good except that those materials won’t show up right in Google Cardboard. Which is what I’m developing this for. The way to get them to show correctly is to bake the lights. They came out pretty ugly when I did that.
The only thing that doesn’t look horrible is the rail around the center area. That is the one material I created in Unity. I’ll be keeping that. And it looks like I’m going back to my original plan of creating materials in Unity. I’d just switch one of the materials and a try a test bake, however, if I leave the other materials they are going to look really ugly and likely take just as long to process as before. So it looks like creating all the materials, switching them all out, then crossing my fingers and hoping for the best while they bake.
