Weekly Update – May 16, 2015

There is so much that I want to work on and create that sometimes they create this massive log jam in my brain and I can barely get anything done. I try writing things down so that I can clear things a bit but that doesn’t always help. When that happens I don’t get much done in the sketchbook and I find myself fixated on some small part of a project on the computer and just have trouble getting past it. I’ve had a bit of that lately.

Telling a friend about this over coffee this week she said I needed to choose something and just work on it. And she has a point. Even though I like to have multiple things in progress at one time, trying to start too many at once does seem to be a bit of a detriment.

With that in mind, I tried working on the stick man logo project this week. And I made a lot of progress. I made enough progress to know that it is going to take a bit longer before it’s really ready to use. And since I need, and want, something to use sooner than it is likely to be ready, I created something a little different than the stick man to use. This new idea also needs a bit of refinement but I have a solution and a version of it that I will use for now while I refine it and work on the stick man. The stickman, I think, will be a lot of fun. No pictures of either yet.

I do have a picture of a sketch from Friday of last week. I was supposed to be doing my early morning stretches when this popped in and I decided it needed to live in the sketchbook.

I finally did something with Maya besides open it, look around and close it. I’m still looking MyFirstMayaTryfor functions that I think are there and I just haven’t found. I managed to make something out of a basic box. I did some slicing and extruding to get this little house looking thing.

It was just as challenging to try to figure out how to render out an image of it from Maya as it was trying to figure out how to create it in Maya. I’m definitely going to need a few tutorials for this one.

When I finally got to the sketchbook this week, I had a couple of things come crawling out one day so I got a two for one that day. The first one, a little creepy crawly thing. I’m thinking it might be worth developing further in any number of formats. It’s kind of cute.

The second one, a squid, has a bit of a story behind it. And though I did not use them for reference on this sketch, I did spend time last weekend looking for reference pictures of 20150516_090722squids so that I can use them for the purple squid. In a conversation with a friend, where I was explaining some of the cool software I use and all that it can do, I off-handed-ly said something about including a purple squid in something. I don’t think about these things really but apparently this squid caught my friend’s attention and now she’s wondering when she will get to see the purple squid. I have finally begun the rough, get a feel, sketches for the purple squid and this is the first one.

Now that I have a graphic that I am comfortable with using for an overlay in things like turntables and such, I think the next thing I will try to do is to get a fresh turntable of the ZBrush dolphin project using the new graphic and add a bit of text. Once that is done I’ll post it on YouTube and Instagram and here so you can see it. Something to look forward to.

And that reminds me. Yes, I am on Instagram. I am @susangasong  and I will try to get a link posted on the site in case you want to follow.
