Weekly Update – June 14, 2015

It’s always interesting how some topic or concept will make very little sense at one time but when you come back to it later it clicks. It’s also interesting how seemingly unrelated experiences will facilitate in understanding something. That’s the experience I have been having this week with ZBrush. I’ve had ZBrush for a few years now and I have done a few things in it, I’ve posted them here and on YouTube. However, I have struggled with getting comfortable in it, as well as, understanding some of the different methods of doing things. I suspect this has to do with coming from a very rusty background of box modeling. It
appears that as I have dusted off my box modeling skills and learned more techniques there, that I am finally able to grasp some of the concepts in ZBrush. Yay.

I don’t know if I mentioned that I have a goal of completing 3 ZBrush models by the end of September. Since I’ve finished the dolphin and then the crane, I need to figure out what to work on next. I could go back to another unfinished project but I think it would be nice to work on something new. While I am working on that, I’ve decided it would be a good idea to brush up on some of the ZBrush courses through Digital Tutors. I found the intro to ZBrush 4r7 course and I have been watching that this week. I’m a bit more than half way through and many things make so much more sense now. I’m anxious to get to use the things I’ve learned. However, life and the day job have conspired to get in the way this week and weekend.

While I have no new models to share this week, from either ZBrush or 3ds Max, I do have some sketches that I managed to get in. I’d call this week’s collection eclectic.

I really don’t know where some of these things come from sometimes. I forget what I might have seen on TV the day I did this one so don’t even know if that was an influence. It’s one of my favorite though. It’s got a bit of that dystopian cyberpunk look to it, to me anyway.

This was more of the working on things for the Halloween scene. I think I want something to set the jack’o lantern on and I was trying to decide what sort of box or crate to use.

Every morning during the week I have a series of stretches and exercises I do. One of the mornings this week the kettle bell looked interesting to me and that was the subject of the sketch that morning. By the way, when I did it, the kettle bell was in a different room from the one I was sitting in making the sketch.

Who knew squids have eyelids. Really, that was my thought when I was working on this. I started out just trying to get the eye part down and I happened to look a a reference picture and found that there is indeed a flap that looks like an eye lid. The squid eye got revisited this week because a squid is a candidate for the next ZBrush sculpt.

Everyone needs a cartoon pig. Ok, I don’t really know why this turned up but it did.

011_06142015_sm_crop

I started this with the idea of the sunshades and the kerchief over the face. Sort of like the earlier sketch of the goggles and the mask. This just sort of grew organically and by the time I finished the character has a bandage across the nose and is wearing a hoodie. I have not a clue where this came from but hey, it’s in the sketchbook now.

012_06142015_sm_crop

Though that is all the new stuff for this week, I did come across a sketch from last year or a little before that of a winter Christmas type scene that I’m giving some consideration to for this year’s Christmas Holiday project. I sometimes forget that I’ve done some drawing, sketch or whatever, it’s always nice to stumble on them later and find they are the idea I need for something I’m working on.

I did manage a little more than sketches and tutorials this week. I’ve ordered a new computer. It should allow me to put my other monitor back on it, along with my Cintiq. It will also have more memory and be more powerful. The potentially frustrating part is that I got it with Windows 8.1. Not sure how I feel about that since I really hate trying to work with Windows Server 2012 which looks and acts mostly the same. But with Windows 10 coming out soon and the need to be able to continue to move forward, I can’t stay with Windows 7 forever. Bummer. The other challenge with the new computer is that it’s about 3 inches or so taller than the one I have which means it may not fit in the hanger that I have for it. That and the idea of trying to get the other monitor back on my desk means I will have a complete reconfiguration of my space when it gets here, hopefully in about 2 to 3 weeks. Oh, and don’t forget the fun of trying to get all the pertinent software installed.

In addition to the computer purchase, I managed to book a trip for late summer early autumn. I’m excited about that. It should be quite an adventure. I won’t be visiting friends or family so no one to pick me up at the airport or any of that. I get to figure it all out on my own. I could get a car to get around but I’m thinking of using public transport. We’ll see. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back.

I will confess to having a major distraction right now. Besides my day job. The FIFA Women’s World Cup is running and I can’t resist. It started last weekend and I have tried to catch several of the matches this week. I have seen both of the USA matches and really I’m not sure what to think. I was initially impressed with Germany, particularly their score in their first match but not sure now. I liked the way Costa Rica played against South Korea in the second half. If I have the World Cup on I really can’t do more than just
watch it so I don’t get much else done except for at half time or at the end. It doesn’t bode well for productivity at the moment. Still maybe with group play finishing up it will get easier.

For this week coming up the plan is more ZBrush lessons and hopefully a start on another sculpt project. Perhaps even something in 3ds Max. I don’t want the things I’ve started to learn there to get rusty again. And of course, more sketches.

Weekly Update – June 6, 2015

In case you missed it this week, it is now June. Time to start thinking about Halloween and all the Autumn and Winter holidays. Really, it is. I know for those of us in the northern hemisphere it’s warm to hot out, who wants to think about wintry things. And I imagine, those of you in the southern hemisphere may not be ready to think about the summer yet. But if you are making things as gifts for those holidays, or are making things such as greeting cards or holiday themed art of any kind, now is the time to start working on it. If you haven’t already. It depends on the kind of lead time you need.

Me? I need to get started. I have a plan for a Halloween themed piece and I want to do another Christmas type piece this year. I may be a bit behind. But I’m making some progress on the Halloween 038_smallone. I’ve sketched out the front of the house that I want to use. I am planning on using the same basic house, once modeled, for the bee project I keep mentioning.

I wasn’t expecting to make it so detailed and so I chose a sketchbook that is small and not quite the quality paper I like. That will teach me. Even if I think it’s just going to be scribbles and stick figures, I should just use the good sketchbook.

Crane_03152015cThat was really the only progress towards seasonal items that I made this week. My other real progress was in finishing the Crane piece in ZBrush. I chose not to polypaint it or to add any texture. I like it just as a sculpt. I posted the turntable of it a few days ago along with the my reference photo. So if you haven’t seen it, it should be the very next previous post. Here’s another picture of the sculpture.

This was another week of consistent sketching. I think the only day I didn’t get one in was Sunday, though I haven’t done one today yet either. There’s still time.

0606_043_smallFirst up was a piece created from memory, though the object is sitting in front of me at the moment. I thought the cork that came out of the bottle of Prosecco my friend and I opened on Sunday was interesting looking and that I would draw it. I still intend to because there are some very interesting dents and creases that I didn’t show quite the way I think I should, and I want to try a different angle.

The one that I really like from this week is the yo-yo. I started it in the morning, and had most of it complete except the part of the string that is hanging out. I had thought I was going to come back later, after work and detail out that part of the string like the part that is inside attached to the yo-yo. When I got home and looked at it, I decided I liked it as it is without the extra detailing.

0606_042_small

And here is one of those ‘I’m not sure why’ pieces. I think I have at least one a week.

033_Small

I don’t draw many dogs. I think I’ve really only drawn one and that was a few years ago, it was my nephew’s puppy but my nephew didn’t have it yet. It was part of a book that we put together for him to read as part of the surprise. That was the last dog I remember034_small drawing and possibly the only other dog besides this one. This one was meant to be a dog I see in my neighborhood when I go for my walk. She’s a sweet dog but needs to live in a home with a yard or with young people who will take her to a dog park or will do something so she can run. She has a lot of energy, more than her human can handle most of the time. So she was on my mind when I sat down the next morning and did this. I have since taken a couple of pictures of her so I might get to making a true likeness of her.

Warning for those who don’t like snakes or reptiles, this is the subject of the next sketch. I was watching a news story, and some of you may have seen it too, about a snake in the cupboard of a couple’s kitchen that came slithering out and ate an egg. It was fascinating and creepy all at the same time. And the cool contrast of this sleek black snake and the tan eggs was something else as well. Obviously the image stuck in my head. I did consider making the snake black but felt it would detract from the simplicity of it’s form. So I detailed the egg some and left the snake fairly stark.

040_small

So that’s the sketching and art for the week. Not to worry, I’ve still got lots of modeling projects to work on and write about. I am partnering with a writer on a method of keeping us both on track with our various projects to that we don’t stall out too badly and so we have some accountability to someone besides ourselves. Our first step was a 3 month plan that we sent to each other this week. It’s already helped me. I tend to stall completing a project if I don’t have something else waiting in the wings either to start or already started. Now with this plan, I know what I need to work on next based on things that are coming up. So for example, I want to go to the ZBrush Summit at Gnomon School in September in Hollywood. As part of going I want to have at least 3 pieces completely sculpted in ZBrush complete, including turntables created. Well, that’s my earliest due date so I knew I needed to finish the Crane. It’s done. I have one more piece I need to create in ZBrush but I haven’t decided on a subject so while I work on that I have other things that are next in priority on my plan that I can work on. And yes, that Halloween piece is on there, hence the sketch of the idea for the house.

And now I think it’s time to get to the next thing so I have more to tell you about next week.

Crane Piece Finished – See the Turntable

I finally got the Crane piece I was working on complete. I sculpted it in ZBrush using this picture as reference. The photo was taken in 1993 by either myself or a family member.

CranePhoto_Small

Now that you have seen what I was working from it’s time for the completed piece in turntable fashion. I should consider adding music to these in the future. But for now, enjoy!

Weekly Update – May 31, 2015

I always expect to get more done in a day or week than I usually manage to. I suspect it to be a mind body disconnect somewhere. It’s probably related to the one where my brain hasn’t figured out that my body really isn’t as young as it once was. But for now I think I will go along happily ignoring or denying this disconnect and continue to try to get 3 months of art projects completed in 3 days, or more reasonably, a week.

That isn’t to say I didn’t get anything done. I did manage to create a character for animation following along with the Digital Tutors course ‘Modeling a Character for Animation in 3ds Max. I deviated a bit. I made a female character and chose not to add a gradient texture/material at the end. Still the whole process was a lot of fun. So much that I think I will be creating a few more characters like that. I have at least 2 in mind already. So here’s my character.
SG_Anim_Char_05272015jSG_Anim_Char_05272015k

I also managed regular sketchbook entries again this week. Though I did miss a couple of days over the holiday weekend. Still I’m mostly pleased with the results. I started with a bumble bee. It is related to a short animation I have in mind. The same animation as the petunias from last week.

And some mornings there isn’t much available to work with, even after coffee. I had one of those days and so for some reason, probably thoughts of the flooding in Oklahoma and Texas, I chose to draw a snorkel.

20150530_163146_CropSm

I’m not entirely sure what inspired this one. Other than it must have come out of some thought regarding the alien emote I sent to a friend in a text. I thought she needed an alien to go along with her Minion. And as my brain works in ways that I choose not to question, that means and alien ends up in the sketchbook. I also posted it on Instagram earlier this week. He is too cute and fun not to have shared right away, so I did. And after conversation about this alien, with the friend that got the emote, he’s begun to take on a life of his own in my head so there is a better than good chance that he will become a full 3D model sooner rather than later.

Another one of those, who knows why sketches. I do a lot of my sketches in the morning before work and while I’ve had my coffee, usually, by the time I sit down to do them, that doesn’t mean the coffee has kicked in. So some mornings, we just get what we get. It’s a little along the lines of an ink bottle. I have started back to working on a dots on paper project that I started many years ago and so ink bottles were on my mind, I think.

20150530_163339_CropSm

Yesterday I was supposed to go to an event that involved billiards and bowling. I ended up not going. However, as I started my day, pool, or billiards was in my thoughts. I kind of like the way the billiard balls turned out.

20150530_163321_CropSm

I also managed to spend a little time working on that crane piece I started in ZBrush. I got one leg worked on as well as some additional work done on the tail. I hope to get the other leg worked on and the whole thing completed in the next week or so. It’s not like there is a lot to do to finish it. At least I don’t think there is. So it would be good to get it done. I don’t know if I will polypaint it yet. I will be putting together a turntable of it which I will post here and on YouTube.

Also on deck for this week is starting round two of the rigging tutorial, this time I will be following along using my new character. And I would like to start on another character using the same low poly modeling technique that I just learned. I think that is all do-able. Maybe check back for the next update and see how I do.

Weekly Update – May 24, 2015

It’s always amazing and really cool, to come across something that makes a huge impact in better understanding something you’re working on. It can feel a lot like being hit in the head and having some mud knocked out. Things get a little clearer. I had this happen with the 3DS modeling this week even though I didn’t get much actual modeling done. Instead, I got a lot of sketchbook entries, mostly in 10 to 15 minute snippets.

The modeling stuff first. I’ll try to be brief. I’ve been watching a Digital Tutors course on ‘Rigging for Production’ in 3DS Max. I finished watching all 78 segments in the course. It was over 9 hours of lessons. As I finished up I decided that I should start the course again, once I finished, and use the character they provide and work a long with it. Then when that was done I would do the same again with each of the characters I already have created that I would like to animate. This would give me 4 full passes with it and I would hopefully start to really learn what I need to do. Good approach but as will a lot of things I do, I managed some scope creep.

The rigging course uses a character created in another course. So I decided I would go through that course. I watched the entire course, it’s only about 14 lessons and around 3 hours total so not too bad. At the end of the course you have a low poly character to use to 041_Crop_Smallpractice rigging and animation. Awesome. So I decided I would do that first. Instead of using the character provided for the rigging course, I would follow along with the character creating course, and use the character I create for the rigging course. I figure this gives me even that much more understanding. This morphed a little. While waiting for our CPR and AED certification course to begin at my day job, I came up with this half silhouette that I think I will use as the design for the character I’m going to create.

As I was watching the course on creating the character several things caught my interest. The method used for creating some of the objects was one. I knew I could use keyboard entry to create the primitive and that sort of thing but I hadn’t really been using it. So I figured out where that was and what it looks like. I also knew that I could change the pivot in a variety of ways but hadn’t really understood the difference between say, local, global, and view. So I hadn’t been using them. It takes a little getting used to but really makes a difference. This alone has potential to make things easier. I also learned about a variety of other things that while I knew about them, I hadn’t really played with them or made use of
them. And the FFD modifiers, oh my. Awesomeness.

So at one point my head was spinning and I was so excited about everything that I couldn’t wait to try them all and couldn’t decide what to use them on first. And that’s when I discovered that suppressing excitement is super exhausting.

I have a feeling that by the time I finish the additional passes through these courses, and a couple of other ones I have queued that my approach to some of my existing projects will change. That is a risk when learning about things in the middle of a project, but often one that pays dividends in many ways.

Now to the sketchbook stuff. Really, I did a lot of them in the morning when I should have been getting ready for my day job. I just couldn’t keep motivated so I’d take a bit and sketch. One or two I did just before bed so you have a few here. Oh and then there is the one that I did while waiting for the movie Tomorrowland to start. Which I liked.

I think the entries from the sketchbook this week need a bit of explanation so, here we go.

I have this idea for a very brief animation about a bee and a flower on a porch. This was done with that in mind. I think the flower(s) will be Petunias. Or something resembling Petunias.

047_Crop_Small

I started out this with thinking of the shoes and the legs. I wasn’t going to go much farther than that but for some reason I did and now this fellow looks like he’s holding up the spiral. A fun accident.

050_Crop_Small

Sometimes weird things pop into my head as I sit down to draw or sketch and I’m trying to learn to just work with them instead of force something in particular. This happened because for some reason the handle on a metal trash can and how it was attached seemed interesting.

053_Crop_Small

The combined thought of a peephole on a door that looks a little like an eye and a door knocker that has a shape of a nose was the general thought here. While it’s kind of fun and trippy, I think if I put a lot more thought and planning into it, I can execute the idea better.

054_Crop_Small

Ah, coffee. The magic elixir that makes mornings easier. This is my small homage to coffee.

056_Crop_Small

I have an project that I am working on for a client, it’s a fairly large project and will require060_Crop_Small more than a few panels of art, and fortunately there is not currently a deadline, so I have plenty of time to work out ideas. This sketch is me working out some bits for an idea for one of the panels. What I learned most from it is that could really use better references, and actual physical ones would be awesome.

And as I posted on Instagram, this little gem I did while I was sitting in the theater waiting for the movie Tomorrowland to start. It was pre-previews as well. I’m not sure if I meant for it to be a bird or a fish so it’s either a bish or a fird. Take your pick.

20150523_210133_Crop_SmallSo that’s the week. It’s the Memorial Holiday weekend here in the States so I, like a lot of people, have an extra day off. I tacked a vacation day on the end of that so I actually have two extra days off from my day job this weekend. Hopefully I’ll be able to take advantage of all that time and make lots of art.
