More Pain, And Then…

I was, going to call this weeks’ article ‘And the Pain Continued’. However accurate it might have felt, it would not be an entirely genuine reflection of the week. There were days of pain and frustration, and there was at least one lesson learned, and a small break through. So.

Yes, there was pain with the VR project. I think I mentioned that I was supposed to include video, or that’s how I interpreted it. When I went back and read the rubric, I had other options. But for most of the week I was working under the expectation that it had to have video. The Google VR video player did not play nice. It did for a little bit but it was so flaky that just moving the player 5 inches seemed to break it again. I finally read the rubric more carefully and found that, I didn’t have to have as much video as I thought, and that, I didn’t have to have video specifically.

I got the minimum number of stations with video working, so I thought, and then started adding in just graphics for the other stations. There were a minimum number of stations required. And then the video broke again. I had decided that I was going to go with option two which was to include audio and graphics. I had a solution, that was probably not quite what they had in mind, but it would have met the requirements and allowed for the video to start working. It’s not what I ended up doing.

For this program, we are assigned a mentor, to help us stay on track and solve problems. Mine has been very helpful and encouraging all along. He was extremely helpful on this project. He found a way to get the video to work. The key was to not use the new Google VR video play setup but to just use the video player. I had looked at this other method before but was already getting frustrated and couldn’t figure out how to get it to work so I didn’t continue with it. I chose to continue down the path of beating my head against a wall. I took the method he illustrated and used it, with a minor change, probably also suggested by him. I enhanced the display a bit and got it all looking nice and was able to get all the videos to play.

I had one last clean up thing to do for it that was strictly a design thing and not related to the video. The method I used for navigation allows for greater freedom of movement. The way I implemented it, meant that you could actually find yourself outside the venue, unintentionally and with nothing to see. The solution to this was to add some sort of collision detection. In this case, it meant adding a mesh collider to every piece of geometry that make up the venue. Well, except the ceiling. I skipped that one. The nice thing was that as I added it, it chose the same mesh as reference for the collisions and so I didn’t have to do a lot of extra steps to get the right shape applied. I’ve included a shot of it running on my phone and a few from the view inside the editor.

Now, the VR ‘Night at the Museum’ project it complete. It’s been submitted, and reviewed and I’m moving on to the next segment. The pain, for now, has ended. In the interest of trying to get the project completed, I chose to not go to Taekwondo one night. I won’t be doing that again. Why? Well, for one, it didn’t do any good. More importantly, I get more from Taekwondo than just exercise and stress release. It does more than that. The focus it requires for that time is refreshing. It allows for not just my body but my brain to relax and that is often more beneficial than continuing to hammer away at a problem with brute force.

And finally. I had intended to do this regardless. The added bonus was that the project was done and not still hanging over my head. I went to the Blues Jam again, and I played. I not only played. I sang. When I was going the the Jams a few years ago, I tried singing a couple of times but they didn’t really work out. This time I chose something short, not too complicated, and a basic blues. The only other person that new the song was not in the band I was in so I had to sing if we were going to do it. I normally sing with an ‘inside voice’ because, I live in a condo and don’t practice some place else. I watched the guys get up there and belt out songs, and I with all the noise in the room otherwise, I figured out, I was going to have to put some extra power behind it. So I took a deep breath and let it rip. I remember my legs shaking part of the way through it. And several people have assured me that the performance was good, and in key. I sang ‘Merry Christmas, Baby’. It’s seasonal. I had so much fun just playing with the other guys on stage. Even the songs I didn’t sing. An added bit to that fun was, when one of the gents who helps run the jam noted that I had come back with a new skill. And I have photo proof. No video this time.

I had so much fun at the jam that I’m planning on going to the next one when they announce it. While I wait for that to happen, I’ll be trying to find another song, or two, that might fit my range and work with my play style so I can slowly build my repertoire. I’ll also be working on my guitar skills. I have some things that I know I want to learn to do and then there is just the practice.

I’m also working on the last segment of the VR class. I signed up for it. It started the day after I completed the museum project so not much of a break there. But that’s ok. I’m getting close. I haven’t looked at much of it yet so can’t give you an idea of what I’ll be facing yet. I’ll have that next week.

And for those of you celebrating this time of year, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Yule, Happy Solstice, and for any I have forgotten, many heartfelt seasonal greetings to you and yours.

Talk About a Beating

You know how sometimes you work on something and work on something and it still doesn’t go right? Yeah, that’s been my challenge this week with the VR project. Needless to say, but I will anyway, I’m frustrated.

The good news on the VR project is that I was able to get the materials all straightened out. I created some nice basic materials with office building type colors and was able to get a nice clean light bake, and they show up nicely on the phone. So here is how the venue for the videos looks now.

I also got the navigation method working, though, I may have to go back and do some tweaking so that you can’t go through things. At the moment, you can walk through the walls if you’re not careful. That could be a problem. I might know how to fix that. But it will be tedious. I’m not sure it really matters if I can’t get the video to work.

Which is where I started taking a beating. I started trying to get video to work in the scene and I’ve followed the steps on the Google developer site for vr and video and it’s just not happening. I tried different version of the Google VR SDK and that didn’t seem to make a difference, other than at one point I completely broke the entire project. Once I fixed it, that’s the point that I decided going to the Holiday Party for the day job was a good idea.

I did get back at things the next day but still made no progress. One of the problems may just be my source video. The app may not like trying to play from YouTube. But if that’s the case, I’m stuck because most of what I’m showcasing hosts their videos on YouTube. Ugh! There are two things I’ll be looking at next when I am ready to try to face it again. One is that there is a setting for internet. It’s a toggle of, I think, auto and required. It’s been set on auto. I might try setting it to required and see if that works. The other thing I saw was someone used a slightly different method to set it all up using a canvas object and a video player object. I may look at that if the other setting doesn’t work.

It wasn’t all just working on the VR project. I had a chance to work on the Ovation painting. It’s coming along. I’m getting closer and closer to filling in the last bit. It’s been a little difficult to maintain some consistency in the size and shapes of the blotches. I’ve noticed I tend to vary between sizes and sameness. I also had to change the nib the other day. That’s always fun. Ok, not. I didn’t have one of the same number that I had been using so I’ve got a different one that is a bit smaller and stiffer. The nice thing about that is that I get good small, tight dots. The bad thing is that it takes more of them and it takes more passes at it.

Something I’ve been noticing on the Ovation painting is the difference in the color of the red (crimson) from when I originally started on it and what I’m working on now. I have a feeling it’s ink coloring, not just my imagination. That could mean that I have to go back and give everything another pass of the crimson. I haven’t decided if I’m going to do that before I do the flame red or if I’ll do it after. I should probably do it before so I have some consistency when I put down the flame red. And here’s a current WIP of the Ovation painting.

So what’s next? Well that VR project is due so I’ve got to get that done. That’s the big thing. The sooner I get that done, the sooner I can get in more practice on the guitar so I’m not total deer in the headlights at the Blues Jam this weekend. I’ll be playing again. At least that’s the plan. I’m still working out which instrument I’m going to take. I’d like to take the lightest one but it has an electronics issue and so it’s not working right. So now to choose. I’ve got one I could take that is reasonably light-weight, has a low enough profile for the neck and fairly simple electronics, and it would be an ok choice if it didn’t need new strings. So, we’ll see what happens. Aside from that, there is still the Ovation painting to work on and I’m not sure what else I’ll get started on for the 3D stuff. I’m still working on that. Of course with so much computer time being taken up with the VR class, if I’m not working on that, I’ve been trying to take a break from the computer. So it may be another couple of months before I really get going there. For now, there is still the saga of the video in the VR project, or what to do about the crimson on the painting, or what instrument to jam on. I’ll have an update on at least some of that next week.

No. That’s Just Not Working For Me

I’m going to jump right in this week. I’ve already put some fairly intense time in on the VR project and I have quite a bit more to go before I finish it. And as with the last one the textures/materials for it are beating me up pretty good.

After some false starts regarding the topic for my next VR project I finally sat down and went through some alerts that I have set up through Google Alerts and found a topic that I could get enough material on to create a reasonably robust presentation. The next challenge was to figure out how to present the information. What should the venue be? I finally came up with something and spent pretty much all Friday evening building it. Here’s a screen shot from 3DS Max.

Yes there are a few nooks. I intend to put the video in there with some cards outside them denoting what the video is touching on. This time I didn’t try to add any materials from 3DS Max. Since they weren’t going to transport I didn’t think there was a point. At first I thought I’d create my own materials just something basic. But I thought those looked a little plain so I decided to download some materials. I don’t know how many hours I spent trying to find the right ones for what I want. But this is what I’m going for.

That’s all well and good except that those materials won’t show up right in Google Cardboard. Which is what I’m developing this for. The way to get them to show correctly is to bake the lights. They came out pretty ugly when I did that.

And this one, while a little better, is still ugly and easily took two hours to process. It took so long that I was able to make dinner, eat dinner, and work on some art while it was processing. At one point my computer announced I should close some programs
because it was low on memory. And it still looks ugly. Nope, just not working for me.

The only thing that doesn’t look horrible is the rail around the center area. That is the one material I created in Unity. I’ll be keeping that. And it looks like I’m going back to my original plan of creating materials in Unity. I’d just switch one of the materials and a try a test bake, however, if I leave the other materials they are going to look really ugly and likely take just as long to process as before. So it looks like creating all the materials, switching them all out, then crossing my fingers and hoping for the best while they bake.

Who knows, I could get more time to work on the Ovation Guitar painting. That’s what I worked on while the lights were baking and trying to crash my computer. I went from it looking like the first picture to looking like the second one in that time. That’s one way to multi-task.

As you might guess, most of the rest of the week will be taken up with the VR project. First I’ll be fixing the materials. Then I’ve got to get the cards installed, figure out how to setup the navigation, and figure out how to add video. I imagine that in between bits I’ll get to work on the Ovation painting some more. Oh, and some guitar playing. I find it helps to loosen up the hand when it starts to cramp from too much mousing or too much putting dots on canvas. Aside from that, I don’t expect to get to too much more. But I’ll have pictures of the progress for you next week.

Not Sure How Helpful That Was

Sometimes we run into set backs to our progress. It can be an injury, it can be an event, it can be a loss, or a distraction, or something fun that we want to do that takes longer than expected, it can be a shift in priorities, it can be a holiday, it can be an illness. A lot of the time it is getting in our own way that does it, but it looks like any of the above or something else. Yes, some things we might have little control over, that’s a discussion for another time with someone probably more enlightened than myself. Suffice to say, I got in my way last week.

Here I was with the whole week off from the day job and only a few commitments given it was a holiday. I had before me the time to get really far on my VR class homework and project and I didn’t. I could list all the reasons I was having trouble with it and none of them were because it is hard. It’s not. But my whiny inner 8 year-old got out and I had a bit of trouble reigning her in. So, since she got to run amuck for so long I got to spend the week with a sinus infection. It was a good excuse to avoid homework for a while. She’s been placated and is now playing with her Lego bricks off in her bedroom somewhere and I’m starting to get back on track.

One of the assignments, that I had been putting off, was to use Google Street View and create a panoramic image. I had been putting this off because I thought I was going to have to install something else on my phone and I get tired of that. As it turned out, it was already on my phone. Yeah. This ended up being kind of cool. You are prompted at which point to take the pictures and when you get done they all get stitched together. Here’s my picture. I took it in the parking lot of a local store.

About my inner 8 year-old. She was a little helpful. I bought some fancy bar soap and wanted some sort of dish or rack to put it on instead of it getting all messy on the sink. I looked around but realized I didn’t have any. But I’ve got Lego bricks. So I made a very basic holder for my soap. See. It’s working quite nicely.

While I was avoiding my homework and being ill, I played some guitar. I played more than I was ready for and so had a few days of tender finger tips. Since I am refreshing my skills, it was fun, and even worth it. Once I could finally breathe a bit better so I wasn’t dripping on the canvas, I also got back to some artwork. The Ovation painting got some love this weekend. There was a point where getting even this much done seemed overwhelming. It’s a large piece for the style which means it’s just going to take more time. It’s coming a long nicely, I think. I’m thinking about adding the final two strings before I finish up the other side. Then again, the string color is going to be close to the fret color so I could change my approach.

I know, I said I would have more pictures this week. I think I do, by one. I will need to do some modeling for my next VR project and I’m about ready to get started on that so the picture potential is getting higher.

And before I go. It is the Holiday Season. In my opinion it isn’t until 6:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day, that’s when the Christmas Music can start and I don’t cringe. Anyway, it is the Holiday Season and you might be looking for cards. Don’t forget you can find
this year’s Holiday card at: Holiday Card 2017

I Wasn’t Awake Enough for That Either

One morning this weekend I was listening to a music CD. Yes, I know about MP3’s and Spotify. I still have vinyl too. Not reissue, original vinyl. Anyway. I was listening to a soft CD, nothing too jarring as I was still on my first cup of coffee. The CD ended and I thought I’d put on something else to listen to. I had set out an Eric Clapton CD along with a BeeGees CD. I looked at the Clapton one and thought “I’m not awake enough for Clapton”. So I put on the BeeGees CD, totally forgetting that the first track is “Staying Alive”. No I wasn’t awake enough for that either but I left it on. Yes, I did listen to the Clapton one later. Please remember not to music without proper caffeination. It can be quite a rude awakening.

And now on to the week. Now that I’ve finished up the Puzzler project I’m working on the next segment. I’ve watched and read all the stuff I’m supposed to and I’m trying to do the homework. So far I’ve made a post that I’m supposed to and I added a forum comment. I think I have about 5 or so more items to complete, maybe 6. Then I need to start thinking about what to do for the next project. The idea is to create a museum or science fair sort of display showcasing a company or industry that could be heavily impacted by VR. At the moment, the challenge I am daunted by, is finding the required material to add relevant audio and video to the experience. I know once I get an idea and get rolling with it things will be fine. At the moment, I find myself doing what I do when faced with big scary new work. No matter how much fun it is or how much I like it. I’m procrastinating.

I am very good a procrastinating. This week I decided to play guitar, work on the Ovation painting, watch my friends test for their new black belts, and go out to the Blues Jam as my procrastination. No really.

Here’s an updated work in progress picture of the Ovation painting. I have made some progress on it from the last time I posted a picture. If I can manage my time well enough I might even get more work done on it. That would be a fun thing. The Music Room could really use more art on that one wall.

I also got my business cards. Hooray! I am very pleased with how they turned out. I used Moo.com. I got the recycled cotton ones. They are made from t-shirt cuttings so they are recycling from the fashion industry. I think that’s a cool thing.

I’m off from the day job this week. And as always I have intentions of doing so much more than is realistic. I do plan on getting all the homework bits for the VR Class completed. As I mentioned, I’ve got a couple done. And I hope to get started on the big project since it’s due date will be running up on me faster than I expect. We’ll see how that goes. Since I am off from the day job that means I will have time for a few other things, I hope, besides just VR Class. I’m hoping to get more done on the Ovation painting. I would like to see it finished sooner rather than later. I do still have a Gretsch painting to get back to. And there is always fun computer 3D art to be working on. We’ll see how things go.

It is Thanksgiving week here in the U.S. and I will be spending a good bit of the actual day with my parents. Both my Mom and I will be cooking things which could be eventful. Though hopefully not. We’ll be trying at least two new recipes from completely different types of cookbooks. We like to keep things interesting. Afterwards it’s back to the lessons and projects for me. I’ll try to have more pictures next week.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone.
