On Vacation, Yes. Forget? No.

I didn’t forget. I promise. I just got really involved in working on something and it was later than I realized when I stopped.

I think it’s interesting that my first week of vacation is over and I don’t really feel like I did anything. However, when I look at the list I made of things that I might do while on vacation, I’ve done almost all of them. So I guess I have done a few things, just not as much or what I expected. The big difference this year is that I don’t have a big project to work on. Last year it was my trip, some years it has been to paint some part of my home. And while I thought about that for this couple of weeks, painting, I decided against it.

So what have I done? A lot of reading. I have three books I want to finish and I finished two of them last week. One was ‘Doughnut Economics’ by Kate Raworth, and the other was ‘Steve Jobs’ by Walter Isaccson. Both were really good books. The one about Steve Jobs, I’ve had for a month or more and I have been reading a little at a time. I finally decided I wanted to concentrate on it to finish it. I was really curious to learn more about what happened when he returned to Apple. It was also fun to read about things that I remember seeing, like the iconic 1984 commercial for the Macintosh. ‘Doughnut Economics’ is a completely different topic and one I think I want to keep my eye on. The concept has to do with an alternative to measuring the health of the economy by GDP alone, why we need to do this, how we can do it, and what things might look like if we lived within a doughnut that does not over use the Earth’s resources at the same time it makes sure no one is left wanting. The third book, that I’m still working on is ‘Crucible’ by James Rollins. I’m not even 100 pages into it yet. I still have a couple of days to go so, yes, I might finish it this week.

Getting things together for the tortilla project.

One of the things I did that was not on my list was to get my bike fixed. It had a flat front tire and my neighbor who has been airing up the tires for me had said that he thought that may end up with a ‘pinch flat’, because, the way the tubes were put in the stems came out of the rim holes at an angle. Sure enough, after a pump up, the next day, flat again and you could hear the air hissing out right at the stem. I took it over to Trek in Ballantyne and they fixed me right up. I even had them swap the back tube since it had been installed the same way. They did it while I waited. So happy. And now it rides like a dream again. I might consider riding it for a little more than just down to the mailbox and back now.

One of the more different things on my list was to make tortillas. I’m a big fan of flour tortillas and I have tried to make them with very little success. This time I tried corn tortillas. After finding a recipe, getting the masa and then consulting another cookbook I have, I ordered a tortilla press. I got a tortilla keeper as well just because. The press was the key. The recipe I used was on the bag of masa and worked well for the most part. I had to add a little more water than it calls for, however that was noted as a possibility in the instructions.

Fresh corn tortillas.

Making tortillas with the masa and the press was a learning experience. But I got the hang of it. The instructions on the press say you can use parchment paper, or plastic wrap, or even a plastic sandwich bag cut open, to put between the dough and the press so the dough doesn’t stick. Just use the plastic wrap. It is so much easier. The dough will stick to the parchment paper. With the plastic wrap it peels off easily and you can put them right on the griddle. Also you can make them thin enough that they are more like what we get in the stores. That was a key, getting them thin enough. The first few I didn’t get thin enough and so they weren’t as pliable.

What I got involved in that kept me at it so late was Blender. I was working on the texture painting of the donuts in my Blender scene. I learned that you can’t always setup to do things all at once, sometimes you have to go in steps. I tried to setup with the texture map and everything all at once and found that it didn’t work very well for what I was doing. I had to make sure to not have the texture map loaded when I was laying down the base colors. Then I could load the texture map and go back over things to add the bits of detail and highlight that I wanted it for.

One donut texture painted. Hint: the one in the back.

I also found trying to texture paint, just with a mouse, to be frustrating. Especially where the texture image meets its wrap around. I kept getting really hard lines that I had to go in and soften and smooth out. That was frustrating. I think, since I now know I can use my Cintiq on my laptop, that I might try that the next time. I’ll be able to make use of the pressure sensitivity of the Cintiq and that should allow me to feather into the edges better.

With the texture painting done, next up will be the procedural displacement and procedural texturing. I know, it sounds like I’m doing what I just did all over again and in a way I am. This is the base to start with. I may or may not need it every time. I’m still getting this part down. For now, I’m doing it this way. What this will do, is also create some of the bumpiness you see on some donuts from the fryer. Or from the cooling processes. It will also allow for a more varied look for the surface, without nearly as much work. That’s the beauty of procedural texturing. You get some really great looking stuff with less frustration.

I did some work on the site. You should notice a lack of advertising now. And I changed the header picture. I thought it was time. And I love the picture. I’ve updated the About page as well. I added a privacy section. That’s an important thing these days. As is an SSL certificate. I will be looking into that soon. The SSL certificate is an even bigger thing than the privacy statement. If you use Chrome, in particular, it complains, like when I go to log into the behind the scenes of the site to do stuff. An SSL certificate will make it more secure and keep all the browsers from complaining too much. I just wish they didn’t cost so much, and weren’t so confusing. There are still a few adjustments to come besides that. I am thinking about how I want them to look and act before I start on them.

All the donuts texture painted.

I have a few other sites that I need to update as well. Some of them have a static html page with just words and links and maybe a picture or two. I purchased a Web Development course from Udemy to hopefully give me new tools and ideas for what to do with them. I’ve been putting off working on the course because of having the stuff for work and so much else going on and I finally got started on it last week. It’s been good and in addition to the refresher for what I already knew, I’m getting some good information that I didn’t have because I’m basically self taught in my web coding. There is quite a bit more I want to learn in it before I start on the other sites so it may be a while before I get to them. Especially since I still have work training to do.

I didn’t get to guitar last week. I’m a little disappointed. However, I was having trouble with my elbow again and wasn’t sure it was such a good idea. What I am learning is that it is not just the guitar playing that is causing the problem, and it may not be the guitar playing at all, it just happens to be when and where I feel it the most. Being on the computer, and typing can give me just as much trouble. As can sitting in a position where I lean heavily on that elbow. So, as I suspected, it’s a much more complicated problem. That makes me feel a little better. And as I have found an aid to another pain issue I’ve been having, I expect that I’ll find the thing that gives me the most relief for this as well and I’ll be able to get back to playing at the level I was.

So that’s the news for this week. I’m still on vacation for one more week and then I’ll be back to the day job. I’m doing my best to make the most of the time. And I’m enjoying the new outside furniture. As you can see, there’s no telling what I’ll be getting up to next so check back again and as always, enjoy the pictures.

Changes Are Afoot

I have the extreme good fortune to be writing this while sitting on my balcony. The weather in the Charlotte area, unlike much of the rest of the country is mild and I feel like I am playing hooky from school, hanging out in the back yard in the middle of the day with the sun shining and my feet bare. I know the west coast is gasping for air. It’s hot there. Hotter than it should be, and drier than it should be. And the fires that are still burning are creating air quality problems as bad as any that we saw in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when we had smog days. I know that farther south of me, it’s hot as well. And while a day at the beach seems like the perfect antidote, in some places the skies and ocean look angry and uninviting. So while I complain to myself that I don’t want to go inside, I know this is a real luxury and I am going to make sure I enjoy it.

I may never go back inside.

It has been quite a week. If I’d had the energy any night to do more than feed myself or take a couple of Taekwondo classes, I would have. I didn’t. I’ve even still got letters that I meant to answer and just didn’t have the mental energy to write. I’ll be working on them after this.

I might have mentioned that my manager for the day job was on vacation all last week and, as we really are a team of two, I was trying to finish up some things I needed to before my vacation and hold things together as best I could. That was more of an adventure than I wanted, and probably just the adventure that I needed. As challenging and somewhat daunting as it felt most of the week, it really turned out to be a good experience for me. It didn’t go smoothly by any means. It looked like it was going to and then Thursday night one of the systems I support hit a major snag with a problem I’d never seen before and I had not a lot of ideas of what to do to fix it. It’s a bit of a story so I won’t go into all the details. I’ll just say that it is fixed. And the system was down less than 20 hours. It made for a long day on what is supposed to be our short day. And then there was patching the next day that was just as long. As a result, I’m still a little confused as to what day of the week it is.

Dinner on the balcony

What I did manage to do last week involved some testing for some changes I’m looking at making to my personal technology environment, (computer, laptop, phone, tablet, that sort of stuff). I purchased a video dongle converter to find out if I would be able to use my Wacom Cintiq that has a DVI video connection on my laptop that only has an HDMI connection. It worked, and it worked even better once I downloaded the drivers. I know it should work on Mac OS because I saw the drivers on the Wacom site when I downloaded the Windows ones. But I was curious if it would work on Linux.

I have a laptop that I have had for 10 years, and I’m planning on finding it a new home. Since I haven’t yet, and much to my surprise it has an HDMI port, it got to be my guinea pig. I loaded a version of Linux on it and started putting some software on it so I could play. Somethings didn’t work as I wanted and so I tried a different version of Linux that I really don’t like. I never got to actually testing if the Cintiq was going to work on Linux because I figured out that I don’t want to use Linux when I next refresh either my laptop or desktop.

I like to have options. I think it is important to look at those options and see if there is one that is going to work better for me than just defaulting to what I’ve always done or what is the ‘norm’. So I like that I can choose if I want to use a Windows environment, or a Linux environment, or an Apple environment. At the same time, I also like being able to eliminate an option because I have evaluated it for myself and been able to decide, is this what is going to work best for me. And that’s what I got to do with that experiment.

Just a doodle

Along with that, I’ve decided to work on some site changes. Some you may not really notice and some you will. Many are behind the scenes changes like cleaning up some extra code that isn’t being used, or even eliminating the use of Google Analytics. Others you might notice. I’ve been running ads on my site for 10 years, and I have yet to have earned $10 in revenue from them. They don’t seem to really be of any help and are probably annoying to other people. They also carry tracking code in them and I would like to stop feeding that monster so much. So I will be removing the advertisements. I’m happy to take individual adverts from people or organizations that I know, use, or support. I’m just not going to do the random ad network thing. Instead, I’ll use that space to showcase groups, organizations, products, and the like that I like, use, think are cool, or worth looking into.

Some of the other changes I’m planning on include updating the header image at the top. I think it’s time for a little change. Like the image I currently use, it will be one I took while on vacation. I’m also planning on updating some of the other pages you see, like the About, and Bio-ish. I have a few other things I’d like to adjust as well, I just don’t know if I can do what I want to with them. Some changes will happen quickly, some will take me a little longer to put in place. And the Google Analytics one has already been done.

Another doodle

So. No. I didn’t get to guitar, or blender this week. I did get a couple of doodles done during a meeting. I did take care of some re-potting of plants and potting of plants this week. I have even started a new garden in the Aerogarden. I decided to only fill half the slots this time since with all the slots full something always gets crowded out.

The most impacting thing I did this week involved furniture. I have lived in my place for 8 years and I finally purchased some outdoor furniture for my balcony. It was time. I’m at the end of the selling season for this type of thing so my options were really limited. In fact the thing I went to purchase wasn’t actually there. So I improvised and got what I could that might work. I’m happy with the result. I only got one chair at first and then, after dining at the table last night I decided I needed another chair. And coffee on the balcony this morning was a treat.

I’m on vacation from the day job for the next two weeks. I have several things I plan to work on, including that study thing, as well as some Blender stuff, and a few books I’m planning on reading or finishing. I’m not sure how much of that I’ll get done. Usually, all my best laid plans for vacation don’t happen at all. This year might be different. I’m optimistic that at least some of them will happen.

Room for two

Oh. I do have news on the Blender front. The newest version, 2.90 is out. It was released after I wrote my article last week. I haven’t downloaded it yet but there are a couple of things that look really exciting. Also, the people at Renderman which is the rendering engine that Pixar wrote, develops, and uses for their animations, they have a Blender to Renderman bridge, which is really cool. I’ll be attending the virtual Bcon (Blender Conference) this year. I’ve already ordered my comfort box and requested the day off from the day job.

The only music or guitar news I have is that I found the next course I want to take. It’s less specialized and more in depth in a lot of ways. I haven’t started it. Maybe this week.

That’s it for now. I know this is a long one. Sorry about that. Would it help if I add a warning at the top?

As always, check back next week to see what new adventures I’ve encountered, and enjoy the pictures.

Not Every Week is Exciting

Where to start and what to write? This is a regular challenge when I sit down to write my post. Sometimes the idea comes quick and fast and other times, I have too many things to say and can’t put them together in a way that I don’t sound like I’m just blathering words from my fingers. Sometimes, I have big ideas and want to write about those except I can’t find a way to put it all in a smaller format so that you aren’t reading for days.

A box of 3D Printed goodies

I have one of those bigger ideas. And I started to write about it for today. I wrote a lot of it and realized that I might be able to do better with it. I have more to say than what I feel I can put in a single post. I feel like some of it needs more explanation and by adding that it would make a single post too long to read. So I think I’m going to make it multi-part post. And as I was thinking about how to put together this multi-part post and what I want to say in it, I realized I think I need to make some changes and upgrades. Yes, that thunk you heard was my head hitting the desk because I’ve just figured out that I have a bit of a project ahead of me. It’s a project I new was coming and hadn’t built up the courage to tackle yet. Fortunately, I have vacation coming up, and I haven’t made any plans for it. Well, other than studying.

I’ve finally made the move in the studying to actually take a practice test. The result wasn’t quite as bad as I expected. And I had at least two maybe three questions that I second guessed myself on. I had the right answer to begin with and then chose a different one. The nice thing is I can go back and look at the correct answers and read the explanation as to why it was the right one, and even why the others were wrong. I think I actually learn more from this process than I do from reading the book. Though the book gives me a starting point for the tests so it’s still helpful.

Newly potted lettuce, or salad greens.

This week is a little bit of a challenge for me at the day job. My manager/supervisor is on vacation all week which leaves just me holding things together and trying to keep things from getting out of hand. And while this has been the case before, it’s a little different with us all working remote. I have other resources I can call on for information and input, as has been the case in the past. It just feels different. So I’m going to try to approach it different.

Because I had this week coming up, I had a hard time settling into something fun to do this weekend. I managed to practice a little guitar. I’m trying to get the fingers back in shape and that requires more regular practice. I’m not getting to it every day yet. Still, I did better than the week before.

My big wins for last week were finishing the 3D printing. Or I thought I had. On Saturday I realized I needed to print 3 more sets of the plug, for myself, so I did that. And then yesterday I found that I need to print one or two more items. All of that has to do with the potting of the lettuce that I did on Friday, and then talking to my neighbor/co-worker about plants and wanting to get her a clipping of one of mine. I did still finish the bulk of the printing. Yay.

The other big win was potting some of the lettuce. I still have one more in the Aerogarden that I need to pot. I think I have finally decided how I want to handle that even though I may have killed the other two that I was going to put it with. Once that comes out it will be time to clean and then start a new batch.

Coconut Lime Rice.
The picture doesn’t show the bits of Lime Zest.

As I was looking at pictures to use for this post I found something else I managed to do that was different last week. I tackled making Coconut Lime Rice. I’d been getting these packets at the grocery store of Thai Lime Rice with Coconut that you just heat up and I thought it quite tasty. I hadn’t paid very good attention to the cost at first and then when it clicked with me I decided maybe I could make it because that seemed a lot for just two servings. So I looked for a recipe online and the closest I found that wasn’t too challenging was Coconut Lime Rice. In addition to not quite being the same thing, the packets also have Lemongrass in them. Which I know adds quite an aroma as well as flavor and if I knew where to get some and how to use it I might try it. Still this turned out to be a fairly easy recipe, and quite tasty. There are one or two things I might do to adjust the recipe. Even with that, it smelled and tasted like eating a summer’s day at the beach. It was yum.

With a little luck and stubbornness I should be able to get some guitar practice in as well as some Blender time before next week’s post. I’ll start tackling my other project, along with that multi-part post. It looks like I will be quite busy for the next few weeks.

It Does Matter

I want to take a moment and discuss something really important. Then, I’ll get on to everything else.

I know I don’t have a huge platform here, still I think this is important to say this. In the United States it is election season. This year we are having a Presidential election. If you are eligible to vote, please make sure you have registered and that you vote. Vote.

If you don’t think your vote counts consider this, the 2000 election was determined by 537 votes in Florida. The 2016 election was determined by a less than 1% margin in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. In some cases, in Pennsylvania that less than 1% margin amounted to just a handful of people per precinct. It doesn’t matter how you feel about who ultimately won those elections, that is not the point. The point is that your vote, your voice matters. It does count. It does make a difference.

If you vote for no other reason, vote to preserve your right to complain about the government for the next four years. Because if you don’t vote, if you refuse to perform your sacred duty as a citizen of this country, if you don’t exercise your right to vote, you forfeit your right to complain about what you get.

So please, make sure you Vote. If you mail your ballot, if you vote early, if you go to the polling place on November 3, 2020, however you choose to do it, VOTE.

And to quote Monty Python…”Now for something completely different.”

The garden continues to grow.

I spent most of my week 3D printing the items I showed you last week. The root saver things for the Aerogarden. I’ve got a nice stash of them now. I have a few more extra items I’m printing for my parents and then I hope to have that project wrapped up by the end of this week. I’ve learned a few interesting things along the way.

3D printed cache of goodies.

I tried to make the job go more “efficiently” by setting up to run multiple sets of the root savers in one print. It seemed like a sound idea. Except that it wasn’t. I didn’t think about the fact that I’m basically printing in melted plastic that has to bond to itself and it will do that best when it is still hot, or at least very warm. Not thinking about that, I setup to print 3 of the root savers as one print job. And when they were done and I took them off the printer, everyone of them either had or ended up with at least one of the “legs” broken off. They were really brittle too. I suspect that the time it took for the printer to make the full round from the first one to the third one and back was long enough for the filament to cool. So I changed plans and have printed one at a time since.

It also seems to matter how old the filament is, or maybe how much exposure to air and moisture it has had because I found that as I got farther into the roll of the blue, I got somewhat cleaner prints. Then when I completely switched to my new filament everything was consistent. I still had greeblies to clean off and sand down. But overall, the print was better.

A green gizzmo that will look cute with eyes painted on it.

I did spend a fair amount of time studying last week as well. I mean as mesmerizing as it is to watch a 3D printer, there really is only so much of it that I can do. So I studied. I think I am on track to start the next phase of that either end of this week or first part of next week. It’s the more intense part. It’s the part where I attempt a practice test and see how things look. I’ve been putting this off and somewhat dreading it because it’s like the real test so it could take as much as 2 hours each try. However, I’m really at the point that that is what I need to do next. The first few are always horrible and a bit crushing. I think I’m going to do ok and I get less than 50%. And yet as I continue, I will get better, I’ll learn new stuff and finally be ready to take the test. So this week, I will also be doing a fair amount of studying, with a few breaks thrown in.

Which is what I did this weekend. I took a little break from trying to study and I did some things that I enjoy much more. In addition to some reading, to finish off a couple of books, I did some Blender and I played some guitar. All of which I had been missing out on. I was really disappointed when I got to the weekend and realized I hadn’t played guitar that week or done any lessons, and that I had not made more progress on my Blender donuts scene, because I had not worked on it.

Dounts with icing.
Kind of makes me think of the Addams Family.

So Friday, after watching the latest Blender Today to hear about a couple of cool new announcements, I settled down at my laptop, to the sound of the 3D printer, and I got to work on the donuts. I have a weird thing happening with the icing on one in that when I go to weight paint it, the colors are the opposite of what they are supposed to be. And since that was the first piece of icing I dealt with, when I got to the second piece I was completely confused by the results. They were the opposite of what I expected because it decided to revert to using the expected color scheme.

Why the weight painting and being opposite matters is that it makes a difference in how the particles, or sprinkles get dispersed on the icing. And it’s not that the color being opposite matters. It’s more that it was confusing. The weight map uses different colors, from blue to red, to denote how strong an influence that area will have, or in this case, how many sprinkles can land there. Normally Red means that that area will have the most influence, or in the case of sprinkles, that’s where they can land. Blue means it’s not influential at all except maybe to repel anything that is trying to land on it, like sprinkles. The first donut I weight painted, blue was behaving as it was the most influential while red was behaving as it wasn’t at all influential. And then the other two donuts decided to be normal and I was back to red as influential and blue as not. Ugh.

A little color on the donut sure makes a difference.

I am really pleased with what I got done. I did change my initial plan a little as far as the sprinkles. It seemed a better idea. I have one more idea for the sprinkles that I want to add. Maybe I’ll get it in this week.

Oh. The big Blender announcements were that they have a new corporate patron. Unity game engine joined at the patron level. Microsoft joined recently, and before that Epic, and Ubisoft had joined. This is really important for Blender because it is an open source application that is community driven. They don’t sell the software. They just write it and update it. And to be able to do a good job at that they needed to be able to hire some developers full-time. This latest patron took them to their goal and over. So that is a really big deal. And yes, anyone can support them at different levels not just big companies.

You knew there were going to be sprinkles.

The other big Blender announcement had to do with their convention. In the past in October they would hold BCon or Blender Convention in Amsterdam where they are headquartered. This year they had also planned to have their first US convention in Los Angeles. I wanted to go even though I wasn’t sure about the price. I would, ultimately, like to go to the one in Amsterdam. This year, both got canceled. And then they decided, like so many events and groups are doing, to take it online. It looks like it will be just a 1 day event and it will be free. You can purchase a comfort box to be delivered, hopefully, in time for the event so you have swag and goodies to help you feel like you are more a part of the event. So it looks like, this year, I will be going to a Blender conference. I think I’ll order the box too.

Just in case you think, that with all that, I neglected my guitar again, I assure you I did not. I watched several more lessons and then I practiced. I re-discovered, there is a price to pay for not practicing regularly. Sore finger-tips. Lesson, re-learned. I am making an effort to practice at least a little each day. I keep making this pledge to myself. It sometimes takes a few tries before I get it. So I’ll keep trying. And playing. I am considering one of the other online guitar learning platforms out there. I was going to go with Fender play, except from the App Store from Apple, it looks like maybe their format, or at least their app might be frustrating. I also looked at Justin Guitar, who I’ve looked into before. His beginner app gets a lot of good feedback so that’s good. And I know his site is fairly extensive. I’m still looking. I am only about a third of the way through with the course I’m working on and I have 3 more to do after that. Which means, as fast as I am working through things, there’s no rush to find the next step.

Check in again next time to see what I manage to get up to next.

It Starts So Innocently

I’m not sure why we call them rabbit trails, but we do. It might have to do with the way rabbit trails seem to go all over and go on and on so that finding your way back is a monumental task. Or perhaps it has to do with falling down the rabbit hole in Alice and Wonderland. Everything is different and you have no idea where you are and how do you get back. In either case, that’s where I was this weekend for sure. It started simply and innocently with a need for a pencil holder. And it just grew from there.

The printing a pencil holder.

I have a 3D printer that I bought several years ago. I had quite high expectations of using it then and only ever printed out one or two of the demo prints that came with it. It has mostly gathered dust and taken up space until this year. As you might recall a couple of months ago I finally figured out how to set up and use a 3D print file that was not a demo file, and print something useful. I haven’t really used it since. But it was a start. Now I have a project, and it all started from a conversation about me printing a pencil holder.

I have a set of pens that came in a great holder that spins and has them all set out so you can easily see which one is which. It’s great. It takes up too much space. I wanted something different to put them in. The last time I made a pencil holder I used Lego Bricks. I don’t have that many anymore and certainly not the sizes that would make building another pencil holder possible. But I have a 3D printer. No I didn’t print Lego Bricks. Though…Sorry, a thought ran off with me. Back to the pencil holder. I went online to Thingiverse and found a couple of options for a pencil holder that I liked and could print. I downloaded the files, did some scaling, did the slicing, and holy cow it’s going to take over 13 hours to print. Good thing it’s Friday.

There are 24 pens in that 3D printed pencil holder.

This was all I really planned to do at that point. Print my pencil holder. And then a conversation with my manager for my day job. We were discussing the Aerogarden and I brought up how the spikes that you use to grow things in often have to be cut and disposed of when you decide to pot the plants that have gotten too big because the root systems are quite robust and I don’t want to damage the roots if I can avoid it. My manager, after hearing about my printing and this problem suggested that maybe someone had made a replacement for the spike that wasn’t like that. And off I went.

Yes, it turns out someone has designed a root-saver replacement and put the files on Thingiverse. Which meant that I had a new project after my pencil holder finished printing. I’ve printed out a test of the spike and it looks like it’s going to work like a charm. I’ve found a couple of other helpful bits like a plug that covers the empty holes when they are not being used. I showed one of the plugs to my Mom and she said it looked like a character from the movie “Batteries Not Included”. Then she wanted to know if I could paint eyes on them, the plugs. And off I went again.

Something useful. Root-saver spike.

So a couple of bits of particulars for those who are curious. I bought my printer through Monoprice several years ago. They still sell either it or a similar model. My print area is 200mm x 200mm x 180mm and the printer only has one print head. I am printing with PLA filament, it’s a plant based plastic that is non-toxic and has little if no fumes when printing. The converting, or slicing software I’m using is Cura. I had to custom setup my print settings in it probably because the version of the software I have is considerably newer than my printer. My printer is the equivalent of a RepRap if you know what that is or was.

The printing really did consume my weekend, which is probably good because the rest of my week wasn’t that interesting for writing about. I’m still studying. I’ve made some progress. The approach of rewriting the notes I took seems to be helping. It may have been a punishment in school to have to write lines over and over again, but in this case it is really helpful and I feel like I’m finally grasping some things. So I’ll be continuing to try variations of re-writing my notes to help with the studying. It may not be the most efficient way to most people but it is the repetition that I find works best. And that makes sense. It’s like playing scales over and over and over, or doing kicks over and over, or forms in Taekwondo. I have done those things so many times that it often takes little thought for me to go through any of those if asked.

A little fun with a failed print.

I had planned to get to the more creative and fun things this weekend and didn’t. Best of intentions and all of that. I’ve still got plans to work them in this week. I’m thinking maybe a guitar lesson or two for my lunch hour and donut work one evening after Taekwondo class. That should work. And maybe some work on a digital art piece I’ve started in Procreate on the iPad. It was inspired by my nephew.

That’s the exciting stuff for this week. As you can see, there’s no telling what I’ll be getting up to from week to week. Join me again next week to find out what adventure I fall into this week.

And something completely different to end with.
